PKR vice-president Tian Chua does not see any issue with party members Nurul Izzah Anwar and Rafizi Ramli meeting with Umno MP Khairy Jamaluddin.
“It is not an issue. We meet everyone everywhere, we meet all types of people, this is a free country.
“[...] People can meet anybody, people can also criticise the meeting,” he said when asked last night after a Bersih forum in Kuala Lumpur.
Following an image of the three having lunch uploaded by Khairy to his Instagram, PKR member N Surendran criticised the meeting.
Surendran said it was “strange and surprising” for the duo to meet Khairy when the latter had not apologised for a defamatory remark against PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, who is Nurul Izzah’s father.
Khairy had also previously organised a roadshow on Anwar’s Sodomy II conviction together with lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah.
In light of rife speculation by netizens, Rafizi later denied that the three had met for the purpose of starting a new political party.
Tian Chua, whose full name is Chua Tian Chang, said that it was the media that had speculated the contents of the lunch meeting.
“I think we shouldn’t try to interpret every action done by any politician,” he added.
As for Nurul Izzah’s resignation from as the party’s vice president and Penang chief, he said she would continue to have room to contribute to the party.
On Dec 17, Nurul Izzah resigned from all party and government posts, explaining that she wanted to focus on pressing the Pakatan Harapan government for reforms.
