Amanah president Mohamad Sabu said today that any attempt to topple the prime minister is normal, but added that he is unaware of any such move being orchestrated by Pakatan Harapan members.

The news on the attempt surfaced yesterday after Jasin Amanah parliamentary coordinator Khairuddin Abu Hassan claimed that there was a plot by certain quarters from within Harapan to oust Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

According to Khairuddin, those who failed to get any positions in the current government are behind this plot.

"The prime minister can be toppled... but via an election. There are opposition parties, so it's normal," Mohamad said in a press conference at the Defence Ministry headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

The defence minister said, however, that he has no knowledge if the purported attempt at an ouster involved those in the ruling coalition.

"I have yet to receive such information," he said.

Asked to comment on the recent spats between Harapan leaders, Mohamad said the coalition had no problem with public criticisms.

"No problem. We practise open politics. Can criticise and free to take criticisms... it's normal in the democratic world," he said, adding that such differences of opinion are a normal feature of any government. 

The latest round of Harapan friendly fire occurred between Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy.

Ramasamy had chided Syed Saddiq accompanying Bersatu Youth members in demanding the resignation of fellow cabinet member P Waythamoorthy, in relation to the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim in the Seafield temple fracas.

Syed Saddiq retaliated by saying that he did not enter politics just to "play safe" or be a "yes man," and would never apologise for speaking his mind. 

This, in turn, earned a rebuke from Sarawak DAP Youth publicity secretary Abdul Aziz Isa, who branded the minister an "opportunist" who is "playing to the gallery."
