A man caught on video slapping a woman in a Penang mini market is being sought by the police for "threatening and beating" the victim.
According to Southwest district OCPD A Anbalagan, the suspect is being sought under Section 323 of the Penal Code for threatening and causing injuries to the victim.
Anbalagan said the incident captured in the 18-second video, which has since gone viral on social media, took place yesterday at a Setia Triangle mini market in Bayan Lepas.
In the 8.40am incident the victim, a 29-year-old shop assistant, was attending to the suspect.
Police said the woman had been approached by a man who wanted to purchase three packets of cooking oil.
According to Anbalagan, initial investigations revealed that the man became upset when the victim informed him there was a cap to the number of cooking oil packets he could purchase.
"The woman reportedly made the remark as cooking oil was limited in the mini-mart.
"The victim told the man he could only buy two packets of the cooking oil.
"The man became angry and rebuked the victim. He then slapped her head with the back of his hand," he said.
Anbalagan added that the man allegedly shouted "Lu jaga! (Watch out!)" before leaving the shop. The incident was recorded on the mini market's CCTV.
Malaysiakini was informed that the victim experienced pain at the back of her head and remains in fear.
"She... lodged a report as she fears for her life," Anbalagan said. Malaysiakini has also sighted a copy of the report.
Since the video became viral, angered netizens have been calling for police action.
