SEMENYIH POLLS | Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today fired back at Najib Abdul Razak's criticism of the Pakatan Harapan government's toll abolition plan, questioning what had the former prime minister done when he was in power.
"Even though the government announcement is for certain highways and it is still in the early stages, it's been only nine months (Harapan is in government).
"What did Najib do in the years that he was prime minister? What did he do?" Muhyiddin asked during a ceramah at Bandar Tasek Kesuma in Semenyih tonight.
Muhyiddin, who was part of Najib's cabinet, said the previous government repeatedly discussed the issue but could never come to a decision.
"They promised to resolve the toll issue. I was in the cabinet, we kept discussing and discussing but there was no decision," he said.
Yesterday, the Prime Minister's Office announced that the government has entered into talks to acquire four highways from Gamuda Bhd.
The highways are the Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP), Western KL Traffic Dispersal System (Sprint Expressway), Shah Alam Expressway (Kesas) and the Smart Tunnel.
The PMO said upon successful acquisition, the government plans to abolish tolls and impose a congestion charge where the rate will be up to 30 percent lower than current tolls.
It added that there will be no charges during off-peak hours, between the hours of 11pm and 5am.
The opposition has criticised the proposal, stating few will benefit during such hours.
