Nurul Izzah resigns PAC post

Kim Quek: Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar’s resignation, which seems to be a gesture of protest, may signify that the Pakatan Harapan-controlled Parliament has caved in to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s insistence that Ronald Kiandee, an Umno defector who has joined Bersatu, remain as the chair of the Public Accounts Committee.

This is, of course, another serious betrayal of Harapan’s pre-election pledge of reforms, this time, without any conceivable excuse, other than to appease Mahathir’s dictatorial recalcitrance.

What a sad day for Harapan!

Bbnow: Well done, Nurul. This is a principled move. You should consider seeking an alliance of like-minded people both in and out of Harapan, which will bring about true reform for the country's future.

As it stands now, we can't rely on the current leadership to honour many of Harapan’s manifesto promises.

Undecided: Good move, Nurul. Therein lies the difference between some members of the younger generation of politicians and that of the older generation.

Mahathir is still very much stuck in patronage and power politics.

Old Fella: Nurul, in politics, loyalty is important. If the prime minister rules on an issue, she must respect it. If the PAC makes an odd decision after that, then she ought to resign.

Is she saying that because the PAC chairperson switches camp, he has to lose his position? Does she want Harapan to lose out?

Anonymous_1eb305b9: This is the bigger problem. Harapan cannot stay united. Is this an overreaction by Nurul to show off her principles?

Harapan’s downfall is because of people like her, who cannot see unity above personal interests.

Clever Voter: Nurul wants the world to know she is resigning because of her principles, a sort of protest. But we know that will fall on deaf ears.

Nurul has no opportunity to be in government because of her parents. That's a real shame. She is taking a calculated risk. She is unlikely to win, as her access to influence is gradually being reduced.

It is important to stay close to the inner circle. By cutting herself off completely, she will end up being forgotten, unless of course, her father is up there. Isn't that worse?

Sivadass: Well done, Nurul. It’s sad to note that the right person to resign from this is Kiandee, who should have done the right thing by tendering his resignation as PAC head upon jumping from Umno to Bersatu.

This only reflects on Kiandee's character, or the lack of it.

Bersatu is morphing into Umno 2.0. Of course, all if not most Bersatu members are ex-Umno, what do you think we should expect?

Wira: The princess of reformasi is sticking to her principles. Very honourable of her to do that. I wish those holding executive power in government are as principled as her.

Justice: A respected politician and leader must be principled, not just in words but also in deeds.

Keeping promises on which a leader was voted into power and not pandering to the demands by or threats from racial and religious bigots and big interests are also examples of principled leadership.

Onward Malaysia: Nurul, stick by your principles. We need more leaders like you.

We do not agree with 'kaki putar belit'. I will not vote for Harapan if they continue to reverse their promises, but I will vote for you anytime.

Brave Malaysian: I respect your move, Nurul. You are the light for true reforms for this country and I see you as a top leader for Malaysia, together with PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli.

Anonymous_1543918786: Yes, it is the right move. When promises are broken, there is no credibility in the committee any more. It is even more so when the two top posts are occupied by the same party.

BuatApa?: Nurul has far more personal and political integrity, credibility and legitimacy than her mother, father, Mahathir, Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali and Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, individually and collectively.

Good move, Nurul.

RM2.6 Billion Turkey Haram: Nurul, I take my hat off to you. Show Mahathir that he has gone against what was promised before the general election.

To you, principles are more important than that PAC post. If only all leaders are of your class, particularly Kiandee.

Kiandee should know that he was made head of PAC based on the fact that he was in the opposition. And now that he is no longer in the opposition, he should relinquish his post as chairperson in keeping with the spirit of Harapan.

Bbnow: Indeed, if a person is principled, he will just tender his resignation. The PAC chief and the deputy need not wait for instructions.

Then again, we are talking about characters who see no wrong in being political frogs.

Anonymous_1527925538: Why some people keep harping on whether the PAC chief is from this party or that party? It is irrelevant.

What is important is that they take their jobs seriously and perform it without fear and favour, no more 'cari makan' types.
