Dr Mahathir Mohamad backed Warisan president Shafie Apdal as the opposition's candidate for prime minister. DAP and Amanah leaders supported the move but said it needs to be discussed at the party level and with Pakatan Harapan.

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim urged the public to reject deceitful politics, hours after Mahathir announced his support for Shafie.

Sabah DAP urged all East Malaysia MPs to support Shafie as a prime minister candidate.

PKR and DAP leaders criticised Mahathir for perpetuating the narrative that Chinese Malaysians in the country are rich.

PAS submitted a motion of confidence for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to be tabled at the upcoming Parliament sitting, a move that could spell disaster for the premier.
