Umno has extended an olive branch to Bersatu amidst the uncertain political situation in Perak to maintain the state Perikatan Nasional government.
This came days after state Umno representatives abandoned former Perak menteri besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu during a vote of confidence exercise at the Perak state legislative assembly, which led to the Bersatu deputy president resigning from the executive post on Saturday.
Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said that he had written to his counterparts in Bersatu and PAS earlier today that the PN government in Perak should be maintained.
"I have sent an official letter to Bersatu and PAS secretaries-general on Tuesday about the decision made by Umno Supreme Council in the evening of Dec 7 (last night).
"That (Umno has decided) the PN government in Perak to be supported by state assemblypersons from Umno, PAS and Bersatu," he said on Twitter.
According to Ahmad, his counterparts replied that any decision regarding PN state administration in Perak would be discussed with their top leadership as soon as possible.
"I am optimistic and positive. May PAS and Bersatu be with Umno in Perak. I hope that everything will be resolved amicably soon," he added.
Faizal presented his resignation letter to the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, at an audience with His Royal Highness at Istana Kinta on Saturday. He also gave similar letters from all other state executive councillors.
A day prior, he lost a vote of confidence in the state legislature when 48 assemblypersons voted against him, while 10 voted for him. There was one spoiled vote or abstention.
The confidence vote was initiated by Abdul Manaf Hashim's (BN-Pengkalan Bharu) motion.
Following this, Sultan Nazrin had ordered leaders of state political parties to have an audience with him, where several had submitted names of their candidate to be next Menteri Besar.
Among them was Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who had an audience with the ruler this morning.
While he was tight-lipped on the name of Umno's candidate, Zahid had expressed his confidence that the party has the majority support to form the next state government, and that it would include PAS and Bersatu.
However, sources told Malaysiakini that Perak Bersatu has not decided whether to support Umno's bid to form a new state government.
