Umno Youth deputy chief Shahril Hamdan has mooted government-guaranteed jobs as a way to combat unemployment, especially among youths.
He said this should be one of Umno's election promises, instead of vague cliched pledges to create more jobs.
"Through a jobs-guarantee scheme or a job bank, all Malaysians can be provided job opportunities by the government.
"If the private sector can't offer jobs, the government can do so in sectors that help raise quality of life and economic output," he said in his speech at the Umno Youth assembly yesterday.
Examples he cited include employing administrative aides in schools, Election Commission officers to speed up the implementation of Undi18, and social welfare officers to care for the elderly and ill so their children need not quit jobs to care of them.
He said such jobs should be made available in districts where job seekers are so that youths need not migrate to the cities to earn a living.
Shahril said the government already spends billions on cash handouts, job subsidies, and other initiatives to help unemployed youths.
"So what is spending RM20-30 billion to create jobs," he said.
The Umno Youth deputy chief said countries that have practiced job guarantees include France, Australia, South Africa, and India.
"If we don't dare to do it for all, and not forever, start with youths under 35, and do it for one year.
"See what happens then," he said.
Shahril, who is also Umno's information chief, said the party should make this, and other realistic but radical promises, to capture the imagination of voters in the upcoming general election.
