UMNO AGM | There were attempts to bribe Umno leaders to secure their support, said party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who added that he rejected all such offers.
“There was an attempt to buy Umno, but I rejected all offers,” Zahid said in his policy speech to delegates at the party’s annual general assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre today.
Zahid said that Umno, which has a long history of governing the nation and was defeated in the 2018 general election, was a "sacred" party.
"Unfortunately, it was brought down through false accusations, but in the end, the government built by the slanderers also collapsed by itself.
"In this time, there were attempts made to buy the dignity of Umno. Umno was also pressured to dissolve. But I reject all offers," said Zahid, who is also the Bagan Datuk MP.
"Umno will not change. Umno is for Umno members and the people. I, as Umno president, will choose the right path even if it's hard!
"We will not be subject to any threats and accusations," said Zahid, whose party lost 15 MPs to the Bersatu party of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
This Umno assembly has brought into focus the party's position as it attempts to break with Bersatu.
Zahid has also been linked with attempts to work with PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and DAP, but he rejected such claims saying: "No Bersatu, no Anwar. and no DAP."
The Umno president has earlier been linked to possible cooperation with opposition parties after his party broke ranks with Perikatan Nasional, the ruling coalition led by the Bersatu party of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
Following this, Umno leaders have alleged that Bersatu was trying to court its MPs by offering money or positions.
Earlier this month, Zahid had already voiced out his claim that efforts have been made to take control of Umno after attempts to destroy the largest Malay-based party failed.
In a Facebook post, he elaborated on how attempts by the party's "enemies" had led to Umno leaders being demonised and labelled as the "court cluster".
The term "court cluster" has been used to derisively describe a group of Umno leaders facing graft charges and accused them of demanding concessions from the prime minister.
"(The enemies) use brokers as spokespersons in the name of Muslim unity. Ironically, the principle of Muslim unity must be based on honesty and sincerity. It is not to be used to take control in order to remain in power and serve the interest of certain individuals.
"If these attempts are successful, Umno's brand can be misused. Millions of Umno members will be controlled.
"Should we surrender? Should (we) give up and just allow this 'acquisition' attempt to happen?" said Zahid at the time.
