UMNO AGM | Former Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa lamented the current lack of unity within his party and the larger Malay community, contrasting it sharply with the mood in September 2019, when the Muafakat Nasional Charter was signed by Umno and PAS.
"Approximately 18 months ago, the Merdeka Hall (in the PWTC building) was witness to the unity of the nation and a new chapter in Malay political unity.
"In the Dewan Merdeka, there were verses from the Qur'an from selected surahs that emphasised the importance of unity and not getting divorced.
"Speeches were made about being big-hearted, mutual forgiveness, and a commitment to fight for religion, nation, and homeland.
Annuar, who is the Ketereh MP, even recalled how the atmosphere was accompanied by tears of joy when the five-point charter was signed by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang in the presence of thousands.
"Today, the same House provides a different atmosphere.
"This has changed to a voice of division, a voice that rejects all, the voice that is confident to move alone and reject others. A voice that uses fear and threats of suspension and impeachment," said Annuar.
Yesterday, Annuar, who is the party's most vocal pro-Perikatan Nasional (PN) leader, claimed the party's leadership was suppressing dissenting opinions in the two-day Umno general assembly.
He claimed the party had replaced all speakers with those approved by Zahid, who has been pushing to sever ties with Bersatu and PN in the next general election.
"Nominated speakers were scrapped and replaced. Only people appointed by the president could speak," he said.
He added that the debate on the motion to approve the president's policy speech has also been limited to supreme council members only.
He likened it to the Umno supreme council approving its own decisions. "There can be no deviation," he said.
Annuar was removed as the BN secretary-general in January, as his stance saw him in the minority.
"I am proud to be part of the voice that existed before, and not this new voice," he lamented.
