UMNO AGM | Terengganu Umno chief Ahmad Said has mooted that Umno takes on PAS in "friendly" contests in three states in the next general election.
He said a healthy competition in Terengganu, Kelantan and Kedah would let the people decide who is more suited to lead the state.
"Which is why Muafakat Nasional (Umno and PAS) should have a friendly competition," he said during a talk with Umno Online yesterday.
Ahmad, who is a former Terengganu menteri besar, has been critical of PAS claiming that the Muafakat cooperation does not exist in the state.
PAS is a critical ally for Umno. Their cooperation has been credited for Umno and BN winning several by-elections post-2018.
However, the relationship became complicated after PAS joined Bersatu's ruling Perikatan Nasional coalition.
Umno has since decided not to cooperate with Bersatu, putting PAS in a bind.
The Islamist party has thus far refused to pick a side but there are growing calls from within Umno for PAS to make a choice.
Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said in the event the party faced Bersatu in the next general election, PAS must make it clear whether they were a friend or foe to Umno.
