There is no evidence that A Ganapathy passed away due to assault while under police custody, Gombak district police chief Arifai Tarawe said.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased never complained of assault when he was brought before a magistrate three times on Feb 25, March 2 and March 6.

"The deceased also did not complain to the medical officer or the assistants when he was brought for treatment on Feb 28, March 3, March 6 and March 7," he told reporters at a press conference today.

Arifai (above) said investigations are ongoing and the goal was to convince the prosecutors to conduct an inquest.

Ganapathy, 40, was a milk seller. He was arrested on Feb 24 and hospitalised under intensive care on March 8.

He died on April 18. According to his family members, the autopsy revealed that he died due to wounds suffered on his legs and shoulder.

The police have not revealed if Ganapathy was wanted for any crime. However, his younger brother is allegedly a wanted man.

Arifai urged members of the public not to speculate on the cause of the death, since the matter is under investigation.

"The police will also investigate the maker of a video clip which contained false information on Ganapathy," he said.
