Cabinet to get Masjid India sinkhole report by year-end: Zaliha

The complete investigation report on the Jalan Masjid India sinkhole tragedy is expected to be presented to the cabinet by the end of this year, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa.

Zaliha said the ministry had only recently received the report and is in the process of reviewing its findings.

“I’ve only just received the full report, and we’re still going through the details, especially the root cause of the sinkhole.

“Once that’s done, I’ll present it to the cabinet. I expect to do so before the end of the year,” Free Malaysia Today quoted Zaliha as saying after an event in Taman Shamelin Perkasa, Kuala Lumpur today.

The minister said this when asked about when the full investigation report into the sinkhole incident would be made available to the public.

On Aug 23 last year, Indian tourist Vijaya Lakshmi, 48, went missing after falling into an 8m-deep sinkhole on Jalan Masjid India while on her way to a nearby temple.

While search and rescue operations were carried out for nine days, the mission was then called off due to safety concerns after another sinkhole emerged near the original site.

In September, the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry cited human activity, weather, and soil erosion as several factors behind the initial sinkhole.
