States want a bigger cut of taxes

State governments in the peninsula are pushing for decentralisation in the form of bigger cuts of tax revenues from Putrajaya.

Johor, at the urging of regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, is seeking 20 to 30 percent back from the taxes it collects, while Penang is seeking 20 percent.

Putrajaya, however, does not appear ready to play ball just yet.

In a vague statement, the cabinet said that the Federal Constitution must guide the relationship between states and the federal government.

PM's 'egg-citing' update

On Saturday, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil set tongues wagging when he said that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim would be delivering "good news" about food prices on Sunday.

Sunday came and went but the news finally appeared on Monday morning.

Thanks to the government's subsidy rationalisation programme, the price of eggs would be going down by 3 sen per egg.

Anwar clarified later that the decision was because eggs were the top food item consumed by Malaysian families, particularly low-income households.

He said he would make more efforts to help reduce the public's burden.

Zayn Rayyan's parents charged

The parents of autistic boy Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin have been charged with negligence that could have caused physical harm.

Both claimed trial to the charges.

The charges came six months after Zayn was found dead.

Not long after the charges, a series of purported leaks made damning accusations against the parents.

However, the leaks have not been substantiated.
