Bersih: Hotel venue not due to RM2m donations
Election reform movement Bersih denied that it utilised a hotel as the venue for a press conference as a result of receiving more than RM2 million in donations.
Asked about this claim at a press conference today, Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah simply said that Bersih could not reserve the venue where it usually holds the press conferences.
"We could not get the place that we usually (have our press conferences), we can't get it," Maria said at the press conference held in Crystal Crown Hotel in Petaling Jaya.
She said that Bersih would account for all the money that it had received.
"We will have it audited, we will make it public," she said.
"Unlike the government, which doesn't even tell us about the RM2.6 billion," Maria said in reference to the RM2.6 billion "political donation" deposited into Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's personal bank accounts.
Asked how long it would take for Bersih to make public the audit on its donations, Maria said they hoped to do it by September.
"It depends, it (the money) is quite a bit. We are hoping to get this done by September," she said.
Maria also confirmed today that Bersih had received more than RM2 million in donations.
The amount amassed thus far had been through donations and the sale of T-shirts. Bersih kicked off its fundraising campaign three weeks ago.
The elections watchdog will on Saturday till Sunday night hold its four public rally which, among others, is to urge the resignation of Najib.
