PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar has demanded New Straits Times and Berita Harian apologise within 48 hours over their reports that she offered a lucrative contract to a former PetroSaudi employee in exchange for information on 1MDB.
Her lawyer Latheefa Koya said Nurul Izzah had served both dailies with the letters of demand yesterday.
Nurul Izzah also said she wanted both the newspapers to retract their reports dated Sept 8.
"They have to respond within 48 hours before I sue them," she said at a press conference today.
Beside pursuing legal action, Nurul Izzah, who had denied promising a US$2 million contract to Xavier Andre Justo, is also mulling a police report against the dailies for spreading false news.
"Yes, I will definitely discuss this with my lawyer. We will wait for the 48 hours to lapse and proceed accordingly," she said.
Nurul Izzah said she viewed the newspapers' articles as an effort to distract the public's attention away from the 1MDB scandal.
"Earlier last week, I filed an affidavit for a discovery procedure to proceed so we can access to bank accounts belonging to the prime minister.
"For me, these (the articles) are a intentional, malicious deflection from the main questions raised by the 1MDB scandal," she said.
