More than 100 Umno members packed the Menara Dato Onn lobby in the Putra World Trade Centre today in support of party deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin arrived at 2.40pm for the much anticipated Umno supreme council meeting and was greeted with cheers and applause from the members, mainly from Johor.

He spent several minutes speaking to the crowd before proceeding to the meeting room.

Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir ( photo ) was also cheered when he arrived at about 2.50pm.

Some five minutes later, cheers erupted again when fellow 1MDB critic and vice-president Mohd Shafie Apdal arrived.

Police presence was minimal.

Speculation had been rife that Muhyiddin, Mukhriz and Shafie as well as several other leaders seen as being opposed to prime minister and Umno president Najib Abdul Razak, might face the axe during the meeting.

About 100 supporters wearing T-shirts displaying their support for Muhyiddin gathered at the Dewan Tun Perak lobby chanting ' Kami sokong Tan Sri Muhyiddin ' ('We support Tan Sri Muhyiddin') and singing the Johor state anthem.

Mostly from Johor, their T shirts bore the words 'Keep Calm and Support TSMY' and 'We Salute the leadership of MY'.

They also carried posters declaring that they wanted Muhyiddin to remain as Umno deputy president.

Muhyiddin and Shafie survived the supreme council meeting with their positions intact, and have pledged their commitment to strengthening the party.

After a press conference by Najib, Muhyiddin told reporters waiting for him outside PWTC: "I am a totok (pure) Umno member."

Supreme council member Shahidan Kassim meanwhile told reporters all went well during the meeting

"The meeting went well, there were no fights. If we fought we would have come out covered in bruises," he said.
