SEMENYIH POLLS | Parti Sosialis Malaysia candidate for the Semenyih by-election Nik Aziz Afiq Abdul declared his assets today, with the hope that his three rivals for the Selangor seat would follow suit.

"This has been a practice for PSM since 1999 to show that it has zero tolerance towards corruption and that we would not receive bribes," he told a press conference at an eatery at Pekan Semenyih.

"We would not use our status in politics to enrich ourselves, our cronies and family members.

"In this era of 'New Malaysia' and new politics, I hope this first step I have taken in Semenyih will be followed by the three other candidates."

Nik Aziz declared net assets worth an estimated RM15,750.

This includes RM1,000 in savings and a Perodua Axia worth about RM34,000. He owes the National Higher Education Fund RM19,250.

The self-employed massage therapist also declared a monthly income of RM1,800.

'Up to people to judge'

To a question, Nik Aziz said that it is up to the people to judge candidates who decline to declare their assets.

"I don't want to judge, (but) the people can see for themselves which candidate is honest and sincere by declaring his assets and having nothing to hide."

Meanwhile, Nik Aziz also pledged that he would not resort to racial elements in the campaign for Semenyih.

The PSM candidate will square off against BN's Zakaria Hanafi, Pakatan Harapan's Muhammad Aiman Zainali and independent candidate Kuan Chee Heng in the March 2 polls.

Aiman is the son-in-law of the late Bersatu incumbent Bakhtiar Mohd Nor, whose death on Jan 11 triggered the Semenyih by-election.
