Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has termed the recent sex video scandal implicating a minister a “political scheme” intended to prevent someone from succeeding in politics.
“The whole thing is about politics. It’s not about exposing somebody’s wrongdoing.
“It’s about politics in order to prevent somebody from being able to succeed in politics.
“It’s a political scheme that is definitely intended to prevent somebody from succeeding,” he told reporters after attending the launching of the inaugural Beyond Paradigm Summit 2019 in Kuala Lumpur today.
Mahathir was responding to a question on whether the recent arrests in connection with the scandal signalled an end of gutter politics.
Yesterday, three more individuals – including an aide to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim – were arrested in relation to the sex videos implicating Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali.
These arrests came a day after former Santubong PKR Youth leader Haziq Abdullah Abdul Aziz and five others were remanded to facilitate investigations into the sex videos.
The Kuala Lumpur High Court today upheld a six-day remand order for Haziq (photo), although the order was reduced to four days for the others who were arrested with him.
Mahathir also responded to Deputy Primary Industries Minister Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin, who had yesterday urged leaders accused of wrongdoings to go on leave pending investigations.
Though Shamsul did not mention names, his remarks seemed to be aimed at Azmin, who is also the PKR deputy president.
Mahathir said, however, that it is not necessary for those accused of wrongdoing to go on leave.
“Yeah, you can take leave or you can carry on. You are not guilty until proven,” he said.
Yesterday, Azmin only responded briefly to Shamsul’s remarks, telling him not to be a "hypocrite (munafik)."
The minister had previously described the sex videos as a nefarious attempt to ruin his political career.
