Dissolving Parliament now will only benefit Umno, say Bersatu leaders
Two days ago, Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan urged Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to dissolve Parliament to make way for the 15th general election.
However, a majority of Bersatu leaders contacted by Malaysiakini were of the view that the move to dissolve Parliament, at this time, was unreasonable and would only benefit Umno.

However, a majority of Bersatu leaders contacted by Malaysiakini were of the view that the move to dissolve Parliament, at this time, was unreasonable and would only benefit Umno.
Bersatu Youth exco Mohd Ashraf Mustaqim Badrul Munir (above) described Hasan's proposal as Umno's way to indicate it was the "big brother" in PN.
"Umno is trying to take advantage of the situation by showing off its 'big brother' ways, added to the fact they cannot stand to see Muhyiddin Yassin's performance in that it could overshadow Umno's image," he said.
Mohd Ashraf also claimed that Umno was under the belief that it had enough support to win GE15.
"Dissolving Parliament is not the only solution but Umno proposes it because they feel the potential of increased support and they want to take advantage.
"But they have to realise that Umno is only riding on the popularity of Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister," he said.
'Major opportunity for Umno'
Similarly, Bersatu election committee chairperson Syed Hamid Albar also concurred that dissolution of the Dewan Rakyat at this point would only benefit Umno.
Syed Hamid said while the move was one possible solution for the ongoing political conundrum, the time was not right to make the call given the current situation of the country which was still at war with Covid-19.
"They (Umno) leaders are making the call because it (dissolution of Parliament) will benefit them," he said.
He added that PN should have an open discussion among its coalition members on the issue of Parliament's dissolution to avoid a negative impact on the present political situation.
Aside from Mohamad Hasan, several other Umno and BN leaders had recently also made similar calls to hold snap polls.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi previously indicated the party's readiness to face GE15 and this was supported by former premier Najib Abdul Razak.
The calls were made amidst ongoing political uncertainties with purported attempts by the opposition to secure the support of lawmakers to topple the PN government.
Meanwhile, Bersatu supreme council member Redzuan Mohd Yusof said it would be more reasonable to focus on strengthening PN's administration rather than considering the option to dissolve Parliament.
“Strengthening PN's administration is more reasonable than to dissolve Parliament,” said Redzuan, a minister in the Prime Minister's Department.
Redzuan's view was also supported by Bersatu Youth leader, Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal, who is also the deputy youth and sports minister.
"It is unnecessary to dissolve Parliament at this time because the government should be focussing on national issues," he said.
Earlier today, when asked about potential confidence and no-confidence votes involving Muhyiddin to be tabled at the upcoming Parliament session next month, the Dewan Rakyat Speaker's office confirmed it had received and accepted a number of motions.
