PN gathering evidence of bribery, threats to void BN's Nenggiri win

Perikatan Nasional is in the midst of gathering evidence for an election petition to void BN’s win in the Nenggiri by-election.

The offences that PN seeks to prove are alleged bribery, threatening of voters, and misuse of federal government assets, Bersatu Kelantan chief Kamarudin Md Nor was cited as saying by Free Malaysia Today.

Last Saturday, BN wrested the Nenggiri seat back from PN in a by-election that saw a higher turnout than during last year’s state election.

BN won the seat with 61.3 percent of votes, while PN had their worst-ever electoral showing since the 15th general election.

PN’s vote share in the Kelantan state seat shrunk from 53.3 percent in the state election last year to 38.7 percent.

‘Vote-buying caused defeat’

On election night, PN’s election operations director for Nenggiri, Annuar Musa, had claimed that over 2,000 PN supporters skipped the polls because BN allegedly bought votes.

He did not explain the correlation between these two claims.

However, the higher turnout and results at the polling districts suggest there was instead a swing among voters towards BN.

There was also speculation that PN’s vote share shrunk in part due to sabotage from Bersatu after being sidelined in their choice of candidate.

Meanwhile, one instance of the federal government getting involved in the campaign was when the Finance Ministry announced that Nenggiri would be getting ATM services - after which a machine was installed at a mini market in the constituency during the campaign period.

Previously, Nenggiri residents had to travel 50km to Gua Musang town to withdraw money from ATMs.
