Controversy over Chinese DCM

Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem unveiled his new team but a Chinese deputy chief minister was notably missing from the line-up despite previously urging Chinese voters to back BN for the post.

Defending his move, Adenan denied promising a Chinese deputy chief minister, stating that this would only be possible if BN had won all Chinese-majority seats.

Sarawak's Chinese-based party SUPP said this was the best it could do for now, but alluded to a possible cabinet reshuffle in future.

Sarawak DAP jumped on the new cabinet line-up, accusing Adenan of cheating Chinese voters in the May 7 election.

Focus shifts to twin by-elections

Back in the peninsula, the Election Commission set the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsat by-elections on June 18.

PAS Youth chief Nik Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz expressed confidence the party can pull off a surprise in the twin by-elections.

Selangor PAS said it had six potential candidates and hope Pakatan Harapan will stay out of the contests.

On BN's side, federal minister Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said the outcome of the by-elections will have a bearing on Prime Minister Najib Razak's position and therefore BN should not try and experiment with an "outsider" candidate.

Nazri also warned that Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali will deploy the state's machinery against BN in the Sungai Besar by-election.

Other Kini bites

The sons of several top Malaysian politicians, including current ministers, were named in the Penama Papers.

Jelebu MP Zainudin Ismail, who collapsed at his home, has undergone surgery over a suspected brain tumour and his situation is said to be “stable” but “critical” for the next 24 hours.
