No turning back: Nurul refuses to retract resignation

Nurul Izzah Anwar will not retract her resignation as PKR vice-president and the party's Penang chief despite appeals for her to do so.

"I am touched (by the appeals). But, no," she told Malaysiakini.

The Permatang Pauh lawmaker was responding to 13 Penang PKR divisions asking her to reconsider her decision.

Nurul announced her resignation yesterday soon after PKR member Latheefa Koya claimed that there were elements of nepotism and cronyism in the appointment of state chiefs.

Citing the need to remain true to her personal ideals, Nurul also said she would not serve the government in any capacity.

Nurul was heading the special Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) task force.

Besides Nurul, Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim also turned down his appointment as the Johor PKR chief, claiming that the selection process for state heads was not transparent.

Nurul was a three-term PKR vice president, retaining the post with the highest number of votes in the recent party polls.

The PKR election had witnessed a heated contest between the factions aligned to incumbent deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali and his challenger Rafizi Ramli.

In a Twitter posting yesterday, Nurul said her decision to back Rafizi for the number two post was the best choice.

“Although you (Rafizi) did not win in the party election, you have convinced me that supporting you as the candidate for deputy (president) was the best choice.

“May Allah protect the idealism of our struggle. Keep marching forward,” she had said.
