Perak exco member Paul Yong has been charged at the Ipoh Session Criminal 1 Court with raping a domestic worker under his employment today.

He has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

"I understand (the charge) but I did not do it," Yong said after the charge was read to him.

According to the charge sheet, Yong is accused of committing the crime at his home on July 7.

The victim lodged a police report over the alleged rape the following day.

The case was heard before sessions judge Norashima Khalid.

Malim Nawar assemblyperson (DAP) Leong Cheok Keng represented Yong as his lawyer. Jelutong MP RSN Rayer and Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh were also part of the defence team.

The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Azhar Mokhtar, aided by Ainul Wardah Shahidan and Naidatul Athirah Azman.

The judge granted Yong bail of RM15,000 with one surety, down from the RM20,000 and two sureties sought by Azhar.

Case management has been set for Sept 24.

Earlier, some nine Tronoh DAP members came to the Ipoh Court Complex to show their support for Yong.

Also present at court were Perak speaker Ngeh Koo Ham, DAP Perak chief Nga Kor Ming, DAP Youth chief and fellow Perak exco member Howard Lee, Taiping MP Teh Kok Lim, and DAP Perak assemblypersons Teoh Yee Chern (Astaka), Chong Zhemin (Keranji), A Sivasubramaniam (Buntong), and Leow Thye Yih (Pokok Asam).

Two representatives from the Indonesian embassy in Malaysia were also present in the court.

Yong left the court at 11.40am this morning accompanied by his wife and lawyers after posting bail.
