Seafield fracas: Cops arrived in 10 minutes, says deputy minister
Deputy Home Minister Mohd Azis Jamman had denied allegations that police were slow to arrive at the scene of this morning’s fracas at Sri Maha Mariamman temple in USJ 25, Subang Jaya.
He said police received information about the incident at 2.40am and arrived at the scene about ten minutes later.
“When the police arrived, I’m made to understand that the police car was blocked and pelted (with projectiles), so they called for back-up. At the time, the situation was not too tense.
“When the reinforcements arrived, the situations were less controlled because there were more people, so they asked the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) for support which arrived at around 3am. The claim that the FRU arrived at 6am is incorrect,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.
He said although police have mistakenly attributed the incident to “two groups of Indians”, the mistake has since been corrected.
Earlier today, several ministers and deputy ministers criticised the police statement on the incident as “false and irresponsible”.
Among them was Minister in the Prime Minister's Department P Waythamoorthy, who further claimed that the Subang Jaya police only arrived at the scene at 4.15am, while the FRU arrived at 6am.
The police statement was later amended to exempt the race, to say it was a clash between two groups of people.
According to inspector-general of police Mohamad Fuzi Harun, 17 people have been arrested over the fracas at the temple.
