Johor Umno is confident that there can be a new state government thanks in part to a promised defection from PKR.
With the exit of Bersatu from Pakatan Harapan, the state assembly is hung 28 to 28.
Umno has 14 state seats, MIC two, and PAS one. Bersatu meanwhile has 11 seats.
Speaking to Malaysiakini, Johor Umno chief Hasni Mohammad (above) however was confident that they can secure the numbers to tip the scales.
"We should be getting one from PKR... this was promised to us by their boss from KL. Maybe there will be more than one," he said.
However, he jested that DAP and Harapan too would claim that they have the numbers.
Asked whether he would be seeking an audience with Johor's Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar soon, Hasni said that he will wait to see the developments in Putrajaya first.
Johor PKR sources Malaysiakini spoke to, pointed fingers at Pemanis assemblyperson Dr Chong Fat Full when asked who could possibly defect.
Chong, however, told Malaysiakini that it was the state PKR that had ostracised him.
"I am a PKR member, still with PKR. It's just that I have a different ideology from them... they have all ostracised me, attacked me.
"I am not enemies with anyone, we can support anyone," he said.
Asked if he was still with the Harapan state government, Chong replied because of the attacks, he is now "neutral".
Despite BN's confidence that it can form a new state government, it may not yet be a done deal.
When contacted, former Johor menteri besar Osman Sapian (above) said that Bersatu had yet to discuss the formation of a state government with Umno.
"We are just out of Harapan, but whether or not we want to form a state government with Umno, that has not been discussed," he said.
Bersatu pulled out of Harapan yesterday, following an attempted coup which has resulted in Putrajaya now being governed solely by Dr Mahathir Mohamad as interim prime minister.
