EC explains Suhakam rebuff

The Election Commission said it was wrong for another commission - in this case the Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) - monitor its work.

However, incumbent Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng said EC's excuse was reflective of its reluctance to show if the electoral process was indeed free and fair.

Prominent banker Nazir Razak said he was boggled by the EC's decision, adding that the EC must ensure the public has total confidence in the electoral process.

Bersih urged the EC to reveal the total number of registered postal voters in each constituency to improve transparency of the early and postal voting process.

Survey indicates ripple, not tsunami

A survey by Merdeka Center has suggested that there has been a 7.9 percent swing among Malay voters away from BN, but it was not enough to cause an upset.

The survey also found that BN's approval rating has increased gradually since a record low of 16 percent in 2015 - following the implementation of GST and the height of the 1MDB furore - to about 39 percent today.

However, it is still early days in the campaign and the pollsters believe that BN may still face an upset if Pakatan Harapan manages a 10 to 14 percent swing in the Malay vote.

For instance, the Merdeka Center said BN and Harapan were pretty much neck and neck in Johor, with the opposition coalition trailing just slightly.

As for PAS, the party has been predicted to finally lose grip of Kelantan, with 55 percent of Kelantanese polled backing BN.
