Anwar leaves it to Shamsul to decide on Haziq's fate

PKR has yet to decide if any disciplinary action will be taken against Santubong Youth chief Haziq Abdullah Abdul Aziz, says party president Anwar Ibrahim.

Addressing a press conference after holding a political bureau meeting this evening, he also dismissed allegations that the sex video scandal engulfing the party is part of an internal conspiracy.

"For now we have only made this decision... we will meet again soon seeing that this issue has yet to be resolved.

"We will need to study this issue again and we also need input from our lawyer.

"We will discuss this again in a few days’ time," he said, adding that PKR was in full support of ongoing police and MACC investigations into the matter.

Pressed if Haziq would be temporarily suspended from PKR, Anwar again answered that his party would continue to discuss their next course of action as "there could be other implications," though not elaborating what these were.

Earlier today, Haziq claimed on social media to be one of the two men filmed having sexual relations in three video clips.

The videos implicating PKR deputy president and Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali were shared with reporters and several politicians early Tuesday.

Azmin has since denounced the video clips allegedly depicting him and another man engaging in sexual relations. He denied involvement and characterised the campaign as a “nefarious plot" to destroy his political career.

Haziq currently works as the private secretary to Deputy Primary Industries minister and Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin.

At the press conference, Anwar said that he would leave it to Shamsul to decide on the 27-year-old's professional fate.

“That I think we (will) leave it to the deputy minister to resolve and announce accordingly, at the appropriate time," he said.

Shamsul attended the PKR political bureau meeting but was absent from the press conference.

Sympathy and support

Azmin did not attend the meeting, but had given Anwar prior notice by phone yesterday.

Anwar said he expressed his support for Azmin and his family.

"I expressed my concern and sympathy to him and the family, and assured him whatever I and party can do to help and assist, we will certainly do.

"He apologised (through the phone) that because of the circumstances, he will leave it to the political bureau to decide, and he certainly thought it would be better to do it in his absence."
