5 Equanimity crew members not on board vessel, say cops

Five out of 34 names registered as crew members of the Equanimity superyacht linked to businessperson Jho Low was not found aboard the vessel when it was seized by Indonesian authorities in Bali yesterday.

Indonesian police's criminal investigation bureau's director of economic and special crimes Agung Setya said the initial reported figure of 34 crew members was based on the vessel's travel documents.

"There are 34 names on the list (of registered crew members) but only 29 were found (on board)," said Agung as quoted by Indonesian news portal Detiknews.

Agung (photo) said police are looking at possibilities that the missing crew members were not on duty yesterday.

He, however, added that further questioning of the remaining 29 individuals would be needed to confirm their suspicions.

"The crew has their own (rostering) mechanism. In short, they are rostered to work in rotation and there would be crew members who are off duty.

"There are 34 names on the list and 29 were found on board...," he said.

He also revealed that the international crew came from Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Thailand, Philippines, Canada, Malaysia, India, England and Nepal.

Indonesian police are conducting investigations under the Republic's money-laundering law and the yacht was seized in a joint operation with the US Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).

It was reported that the yacht was first detected entering Indonesian waters last November, and had passed through the resort island of Raja Ampat in East Nusa Tenggara, before moving westward towards Lombok and Bali.

The US Department of Justice (DOJ), in its asset forfeiture suit, claimed Jho Low had commissioned the superyacht to be built at an estimated cost of US$250 million (RM1 billion), using money allegedly siphoned from 1MDB.

According to reports, the 91.5m-long vessel has a spa and beach club, a beauty salon, a gym, a sauna, a Turkish bath and a large pool. The interior has some orientally inspired themes, using materials such as wenge, bamboo and gold lead.
